I always approach interviews with an excitement to find an amazing local story and an angle of objectivity. However, when you enter a building that literally smells like chocolate brownies...objectivity tends to go out the window! This was my first impression of Nomu.
Nomu, which is an amazing local brand started by Paul Raphaely and Tracy Faulkes, creates a delicious hot chocolate range, as well as various other spices, meat rubs and all-round scrumptious products. Although my objectivity had long since left me, I was still determined to uncover the story behind this unique brand. According to Paul, the story of Nomu begins, not in December 2000 when the brand was launched, but when Tracy went to boarding school. Not satisfied with the boarding school food (as someone who has been to boarding school...I can relate), Tracy started playing around with flavours and ultimately developed her love for food. This passion in combination with her perfectionism and Paul's strategic skill bought Nomu to life! Fuelled by whatever new tantalizing treat Tracy invents and whatever product Paul wants to improve, Nomu is in a state of continuous and sustainable growth. Sustainability being one of the company’s priorities, according to Paul, the company must be sustainability as it supports both Tracy and Paul, as well as all their employees. At this point of the interview, the brand and the entire Nomu team had truly gained my respect. However, it was the next part the truly won me over. (Between us, it might have been the hot chocolate i was drinking that won me over...) Anyway, in the next part, Paul jokingly stated that their hot chocolate should taste like a hug! This was the first introduction to the brand's more playful side. This is essentially where the beautiful paradox of this brand lies. Nomu embodies the skill and perfectionism demanded by great food, as well as the warm, playful nature of hot chocolate. The strength and prestige of a successful business, as well as the family-like atmosphere of an office filled with brownies. The elite status of a healthy, sustainable brand, as well as the familiarity of every-day products. Based on this conclusion, Nomu has won me over, not only as a blogger, but also as a loyal customer.
